Rams Scale Their Own Fourteener in 87-73 Drubbing of New Mexico

Elbert, Massive, Long’s, Pike’s.

All well-known amongst the 53 peaks in Colorado that are known as “Fourteeners”.

And the 20-21 Rams’ Basketball team created a fourteener of their own as they ran out to a healthy double-digit first half lead in scoring their 14th conference victory of the season, an all-time school record.

The Rams started fast, leading 14-4 after the first 4 minutes over the short-handed Lobos. And then an early opportunity for the bench went astray as the Rams struggled to score and then subsequently failed to stop the visitors.

The game was tied at 20, the coach wasnt happy, and back to the floor went the starters. And within a span of 4 minutes, the Rams went on a 21-2 run, pushing the lead to 41-22.

The game wasn’t over.

But it was.

The Lobos never got closer than the final margin of 14 points and all that remained in the final 25 minutes was a triple-double watch for David Roddy.

Here’s how my Twitter feed went:

And it was awesome that former CSU great Daniel Bejarano responded.

It wasn’t to be as Roddy would fall one assist short, finishing with 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists.

Junior Adam Thistlewood led the way for the Rams with a career-high 27 points on 11-13 shooting including 5-7 from beyond the arc.  Kendle Moore chipped in 15, and Isaiah Stevens fell 1 point short of another double-double with 9 points and 10 assists.

It wasnt a work of art. In fact it had an aura of weirdness with four key Lobos staying behind in Albuquerque reportedly protesting the firing of their head coach last week.

But it was a win.

Thistlewood and Moore

When last we saw them they were getting up shots after the Air Force game had concluded. Moore was coming off an 0-fer and Thistlewood was there to help his close friend.

So how’d they do?

As mentioned earlier, Thistlewood was 5-7 from behind the arc. Moore ended the game 3-6 after making his first two. A combined 8-13 for the junior leaders.

John Tonje was tonight’s post-game grinder as he has also been in a bit of a mini-slump. If he follows the form of Moore and Thistlewood, I think we can look for some fireworks on Friday at Nevada.

A Bionic Legging

Post-game David Roddy was asked about Adam Thistlewood’s performance which included a high-flying dunk after an out-of-control Lobo close out on the perimeter. Roddy responded that the legging Adam wears is really bionic and allows him to jump high.

When Thistlewood was asked about it post-game after being told what Roddy said, he made it clear that he was just hoping not to miss it.

A Pre-Game Intro to Remember

The player introductions were delivered by the families.  You can see the majority of the video that was displayed on the scoreboard here:
