I hope this letter finds you and the rest of the staff of xxxx well, continuing to do the great work that you do. I wanted to reach out and convey my continued interested in the Development Director position, and to share some of the work that I was already doing on your behalf.


As I mentioned on Friday, foundation affinity groups should be ground zero for you as you breakdown your list of prospects, based on those affinity groups, you can zero-in on your top potentials. For example, Funders for a Just Economy provides a solid list of foundations that should be included in your first pass as you build your portfolio. Obviously more detailed research is needed, but all these funders are connected around the broad goal of economic justice, which is where your programming must be directed in order to successfully recruit institutional funders. For starters, you should attempt to build a relationship with the members of the FJE leadership:

Bob Shull, Public Welfare Foundation

Manisha Vaze, Neighborhood Funders Group


Additionally, the Asset Funders Group will provide some additional targets for your team to investigate. On a deeper level, The Scherman Foundation and the Sandler Foundation should move to the top of your list, as they both fund organizations with a similar tenor to xxxxx. Center for Budget and Policy Priorities also publishes their list of foundation and individual donors, something you should mine for potential support.


I must admit some surprise at not receiving an offer following our conversation on Friday during which you suggested multiple times that an offer was imminent. Based on that conversation I turned down the competing offer that I had been considering, which expired on Friday night. Needless to say, closing out business the following Monday with no offers has put me in a far more precarious position than existed 72 hours ago. I’m not one to cry foul, but terminology could have been chosen with greater care on your part last week.

I’m happy to provide any additional information that you require regarding my candidacy, and I still would enjoy the opportunity to work together, but I felt justified in expressing my disappointment in a more personal way.
