Absolutely agree.

That article brought back many memories. When I was coming up sports were very much a community thing centered around parks and schoolyards. The organized leagues were typically sponsored by religious and community organizations, not by H.S. coaches and former professional athletes trying to find more ways to make money or to stock their H.S. teams with kids recruited from out of district, although there was some of that recruitment going on even when I was in H.S in the late 50's. For example, we got a super QB from Ft. Collins who had been expelled and who led us almost to the state championship.

My first foray into organized sports was in the 6th grade in Muskegon, Mich. I was tall for my age and started shooting hoops and playing in pick up games at a local park and told my dad I liked the game. He asked me if I wanted to play indoors in the cold Michigan winter and took me to a Catholic Youth Association tryout for a youth league. Basically I was thrown onto the floor and was one of only one of about 4 white kids in a group of about 70 or 80 kids of various ethnicities. And I loved the quality of play which was a real surprise to me as I was forced to up my game to a level I never realized I had.
