To play devil's advocate

Why is there a need for one? I get it in basketball where it is a money maker for even the little guys with TV contracts and such, but that's not the case for smaller sports.

Most years the MW is a one-bid conference, although this year it shouldn't be. All it can do is punish the team that plugged through the conference and won it if they have one bad game in the tourney. MW doesn't have a volleyball tourney either, but both sports have had them in the past.

MW does have tourneys in baseball and soccer. I wonder if it's a coaches decision type thing?
