CSU Ramblings

Recently I feel the overall strength of the conference

Has really hamstrung the program in terms of advancing far. The MW used to be very, very good with BYU and Utah too. That is when CSU consistently had top 20 and top 10 teams. Also their best Final Four-caliber teams. The MW drop in talent and mostly becoming a one-bid league is no coincidence to CSU advancing farther, and to some extent having less talented teams.

It's made it harder to get a good seed and it also means a long stretch of time without top competition that all of a sudden changes with the tournament. In sports like volleyball, getting a top seed and being able to host means a lot in terms of advancing. Last time CSU advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2014 they also hosted. I really do not think there has been underachieving in the program pretty much ever when you really look at it closely.

Hilbert has done a great job of OCS, which has helped the rankings some. And he gets good teams at home, too, which is awesome.

CSU did have Final Four caliber talent in the early 2000s and it's too bad they never got past a Sweet 16, but it's hard to knock consistent Sweet 16 appearances then, no?

Now for Final Fours, etc., kind of luck of the draw in some senses. Need some talent upticks in other areas, where CSU just can't compete with other top programs And like other sports there is a small handful that just dominate and the rest can only be hopeful to make a move. In volleyball it's Nebraska, Penn State and Stanford for the most part. One of those schools has won the last six titles, splitting them evenly at two a piece.

I think we all want more in the AD across the board but I have a hard time thinking volleyball has ever underachieved especially when it's an NCAA mainstay unlike other sports at CSU.
