It's Todd Helton Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#92 multi-sport athlete.

The Rockies' second and final season of playing their home games at Mile High Stadium ended in August 1994 because of the baseball strike. First baseman Andres Galarraga hit 31 home runs in an abbreviated season. Little did he know that some 1,300 miles to the east, his successor was taking part in two-a-days for a college football team.

That season, Todd Helton did indeed start at quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers -- for a while. He got hurt a few games into the season and then played Wally Pipp (another first baseman) to freshman Peyton Manning's Lou Gehrig from that point. Helton finished his college football career with 484 yards and four touchdowns passing and 90 yards rushing. For a time, Helton, Manning and Tee Martin (who quarterbacked the Vols to a national championship) were all on the same depth chart.

Despite Galarraga continuing to be highly productive offensively and excellent defensively, the Rockies knew they had something special with Helton, who took over at first base in Colorado full time in 1998, made the putout that sent the Rockies to their only World Series in 2007 and was The Toddfather through 2013, perhaps the greatest player in franchise history.

On deck: Canadian Cub.
