Reminiscing Moment - Being embarrased by an upperclassman on day 1
I saw the posting where the incoming freshman are now showing up on campus/FC and it reminded me of my initial descent into FC from So Cal.
Back in those days, there weren't official summer programs and very few (if any) players got summer school paid for so there were only a handful in FC over the summer. The freshmen would report a couple of days prior to the vets. Felt pretty good after competing with the other freshmen for a couple days and then the "grown men" showed up. As a newly minted 18 year old, it blew my mind that I had teammates who were married and had kids, some looked like they were 30! My HS QB was 5'7" 140 pounds so the lazers I would see in practice took a little bit to get used to. And being a 183 pound DB (my official weigh in weight my true frosh year), much smaller than most.
So we have the morning practice where Sanjay Beach, Dewey Dorough, JD Brookhart and Todd Terrell have fun torturing me in 1 on 1 drills, lol. It was unpadded but I think I started out doing 1 on 1 drills with like a 15 yard cushion as I didn't want to get beat (that and never having played corner in HS except a little in the OC all star game, wasn't natural even though I could run).
Morning practice ends and we go to a cafeteria somewhere at the student center. So we're all in line getting our food. Right behind me in line was one of the female trainers who was somewhat attractive. So I kind of casually wanted to start a mini-conversation to say hi and I said, "so, what's your major?" I thought I was being sociable.
It just so happens that our superstar QB was the next guy in front of me heard me say that, turned to me and said (quite loudly), "WHAT? That's the worst pick up line I've ever heard!! You gotta do better than that?"
Holy crap! Kelly, I'm going to be a first round draft choice 5 yr senior, Stouffer just embarrassed the s*$t out me as a true frosh in front of what seemed like the entire team on the very first day of full team camp. UGH!! Um, I got beat red and tried to casually get out of that awkward situation. I got some ribbing from the fellas for the next couple of days from all classes. And the other true frosh had a week's worth of fun out of that one.
So when I think of first day(s) of camp, 33 years later, that thought enters my mind every year at least once.
