Thinking about not winning since 2002... (Long Post)

We have lost our focus as a football program. All this talk in recent years about joining the Big 12 via expansion when we can't even win the "lowly" MWC. I think we as a fan base have fallen to envy and coveting and forgot why we we're CSU fans in the first place. I believe our priorities have been to externally guided for too long. We have rewarded ourselves with a new stadium, hired big SEC coaches, and signed uniform contracts so we can look just like the “big boys”. This is not a save our stadium argument; I liked Hughes and I like the new stadium on campus. This isn’t even an anti-SEC argument since I think the talent we have pulled in has been mostly impressive (though I do think it leads to us not caring enough about regional, traditional rivalries). I can’t really say I like anything about the uniforms since I’m a traditional guy who likes the simple green and gold week in and week out.
My point is that we have lost our character. We took on the appearance of a big program without a gain in substance. All hat, no cattle. Hughes, and long-standing coaches like Sonny, and humble uniforms all represented a gritty, chip-on-the-shoulder, underdog mentality that served our land-grant school well. We have a pretty cool history and some major names have come through here. Great stories that are lost when we focus our attention outside of our program and hope to impress P5 conferences. Instead, let’s focus on making a team that is great by MWC standards and focus on representing our university and our state well. Unless we water our own lawn and focus on the MWC instead of where we may wish we were, we won't win for another 17 years.
