It's Duke Kahanamoku Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown
#84 multi-sport athlete.
Duke (his real name) Kahanamoku was the fastest swimmer in the world for a long stretch, winning the 100-meter freestyle in the 1912 and 1920 Olympics, and finishing second to Johnny Weissmuller in 1924 at age 34, when he also was on the U.S. Olympic water polo team. Kananamoku revolutionized the sport by developing the flutter kick, which replaced the scissors kick.
He also is primarily responsible for popularizing the sport of surfing. To this day, The Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championships are held in honor of the native Hawaiian.
