It’s Ron Reed Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#82 multi-sport athlete.

Ron Reed was a heck of a college basketball player, averaging a double-double in all three of his varsity seasons at Notre Dame. In his junior season, in 1963-64, he averaged 20.0 points and 17.7 rebounds per game. Keep in mind he stood only 6-foot-6.

Coming out of LaPorte (Ind.) High School, in the days before the modern Major League Baseball draft, he had received a contract offer from the Kansas City Athletics, but he turned it down to head for South Bend on a basketball scholarship. Baseball was put on the back burner.

Then it was on to the NBA, where the Detroit Pistons took Reed in the third round of the 1965 draft. He averaged 8.0 points per game in two professional seasons before telling coach Dave DeBusschere (who will appear later in this Countdown himself) he was going back to baseball.

In fact, Reed was already playing minor-league baseball in the offseason. The NBA season in those days got done in time that he could go straight from one sport to the other, and he had signed a deal with the Milwaukee Braves.

A couple of years later, they were the Atlanta Braves, and Reed began a 19-year big-league career that saw him go 146-140, including 18-10 in 1969, when the Braves won the NL West (yes, West) in the first year of baseball divisions. He was the losing pitcher in Game 2 of the first National League Championship Series, as the Amazin' Mets swept the Braves in three games.

Reed won at least 10 games in seven different seasons, but what he did at age 40 is equally noteworthy. He went 9-1 for the Philadelphia Phillies, helping them reach the 1983 World Series. He pitched three games in relief in a five-game series loss to the Baltimore Orioles, but he pitched well, with a 2.70 ERA, allowing one run in 3 1/3 innings.

On deck: A Marauder who was a Heisman runner-up.
