It's Bert Kuczynski Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#79 multi-sport athlete.

Bert Kuczynski had an interesting stat line in 1943: 0-1 record, 24 2/3 innings pitched, 4.01 ERA and one catch for 4 yards.

Kuczynski was one of the few athletes to play in both Major League Baseball and the NFL during the same year. In 1943, the Ivy Leaguer from Penn played for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Detroit Lions.

In 1946, after two years of serving in World War II in the U.S. Navy, Kuczynski added another another notable accomplishment when he played for the Philadelphia Eagles, a season in which he hauled in his only career touchdown reception. With his stint with the Eagles, he joined an even rarer club, playing for two top-level pro teams in two sports in the same city.

Later in the Countdown, another athlete who had that same distinction will be listed. And this one played his college ball in Fort Collins.

In the picture below, the rookie Kuczinski is in the middle, flanked by Baseball Hall of Famer Chief Bender on the left and A's prospect Billy Woods on the right.
