It’s Dwayne Johnson Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#53 multi-sport athlete.

Getting cut by the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL in 1995 might have been the best thing that ever happened to Dwayne Johnson.

That ended his football dreams, and he had legitimate ones after starting for the Miami Hurricanes as a defensive tackle, playing on the same defense in 1993 and 1994 with the likes of Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis. The Hurricanes even won a national title with Johnson on the team -- in 1991, when he was a freshman and seldom played. But he still got a ring.

But Johnson had bigger things in store than playing football north of the border. He turned to the family business: professional wrestling.

Initially Johnson went by the name Rocky Maivia, which paid tribute to his pro wrestling grandfather ("High Chief" Peter Maivia) and pro wrestling father (Rocky Johnson). Not long after that, "Rocky" got shortened to "Rock" and then The Rock, who won his first of numerous WWF championships in 1998.

But, of course, it got better. The Rock's good looks and personality made him a natural for acting, and he got his big break in 2001, playing the Scorpion King in "The Mummy Returns." Scores of movie credits later, Johnson is now one of the world's most popular movie stars.

So is he done? Maybe, maybe not. He has dropped hints about running for president of the United States.

Below, Johnson is pictured with another pretty good athlete.

On deck: They said he wasn’t big enough to play.
