It’s John Stearns Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#51 multi-sport athlete.

John Stearns wasn't a bad dude. But he hit like one playing safety for CU during the early 1970s and was a key player who made a crucial play in a bowl game for the 1971 team that finished third in the country behind Nebraska and Oklahoma. And he earned that name on the football field rather than the place where he would make a much bigger mark as a pro.

In one of the gutsiest calls in CU history, coach Eddie Crowder called for a fake punt against Houston in the 1971 Bluebonnet Bowl on fourth-and-9 and the 10-yard line. The snap went to the short man, Stearns, who ran it out to the 20 -- just far enough.

Stearns made first-team all-Big Eight in 1972 for the CU football team, and the following spring he led the nation in home runs (15) while becoming a first-team All-American as a baseball catcher for the Buffs.

Everyone knew baseball was his future, which is why he didn't get drafted higher in football. The Buffalo Bills selected him in the 17th round back in the days when the draft went much deeper than it does now -- for one thing, there are more NFL teams now -- and the Bad Dude was not thrilled about it.

The Colorado Daily asked his opinion about being taken so late. "Frankly, I'm pissed," Stearns said, and the Daily printed it.

A little more than a month later, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Stearns in the first round -- second overall, behind high school phenom pitcher David Clyde. The Phillies later traded him to the New York Mets, for whom he played 10 seasons.

Clyde fizzled as a pro, but Stearns certainly did not, making the NL all-star team four times.

On deck: He set the record that Russ Francis broke.
