At our base, humans are driven to ensure their own survival. Beyond the obvious material needs like food, air, water, money, shelter, etc., that also includes our emotional survival. We create “safe” identities (self-images, if you will), that make us feel good about ourselves, where we are in life, what we’ve done and why, and what we believe. And we’ll defend those identities fiercely, as if our very survival is at stake. And our emotional survival actually is. To admit we are wrong or to change our mind involves renouncing our entire identity. Very hard to do for most people. It requires looking at issues in their true societal context, rather than in our self-created personal context.
