It’s Kirk Gibson Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#18 multi-sport athlete.

Kirk Gibson is in the Hall of Fame. The College Football Hall of Fame, that is.

From 1975-78, Gibson caught 112 passes for 2,347 yards and 24 touchdowns for Michigan State in an era when teams did not pass nearly as often as they do now. That's an average of 21.0 yards per reception, which is terrific in any era. He also averaged 9.0 per rush, mainly on reverses, and scored two more TDs that way. He was a first-team All-American.

MSU football coach Darryl Rogers had an intriguing idea on another way to use Gibson -- as a baseball player.

Gibson played just one year of college baseball, but he was a natural, batting .390 with 16 home runs in 48 games. That one year, and his obvious athletic ability, was enough for the Detroit Tigers to select the local kid in the first round of the 1978 draft.

Gibson is best known for his walk-off home run against Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. That gave the Los Angeles Dodgers the advantage over the Oakland A's, and L.A. went on to win the Series.

But another homer was almost on that same level. Four years earlier, in the decisive Game 5 of the 1984 World Series, the Tigers led 5-4 in the eighth inning with two men on. Goose Gossage was on the hill for the Padres. First base was open. And Goose refused to back down and walk Gibson intentionally. Boom! Now it's 8-4, and the game and World Series are effectively over.

Gibson was one of the greatest competitors. He once said, mixing his two sports: "My idea of a 'Super Bowl' is when a catcher is standing in front the plate with the ball, waiting for me as I round third ... and I make him drop it. That's a quality Super Bowl."

Check out the video attached below. Sparky was fantastic.
