So was he unable or unwilling to unload Wade Davis before the deadline?

Just about every contender wanted bullpen help and his numbers away from Coors are very good. Even if it required the Rox to eat some of his salary, it seems like there would have been teams eager to get a guy like him.

That said...spending the money on both the bullpen and Desmond seemed like decent moves to me at the time. Prior to spending all that money on bullpen guys, the Rox bullpen was the glaring issue. Ottavino wasn't a sure thing as evidenced by his >5 e.r.a. in 2017 and in three seasons Oberg had only gotten under a 5 e.r.a. once, and just barely. So it is easy to criticize JB for spending that money on guys who have been largely ineffective but he would have been criticized just as much for doing nothing, particularly if Ottavino & Oberg hadn't developed into solid pitchers and even still - they are only two guys. As for Desmond...well...except for his first season when he only played 95 games, I think he has done exactly what he was paid to do: hit. Last year he played in 160 games, 82R, 88RBI, 22HR, 20SB. The knock on him (which is legit) was his BA last year but even with hitting a paltry .236 he still had pretty good overall run production and he's on pace for about the same this year but with better BA (closer to his career avg) although SBs are down. All in all I think it has been a fine signing. The main issue is they don't have a position for him so they are sticking him in CF which I don't get. I can't imagine Blackmon would be worse out there. Maybe Chuck can't cover as much ground these days but also wouldn't make as many errors. So if there was a mistake in signing Desmond it was that there wasn't a plan for where to play him, although I think the idea was at 1B so then with signing Murphy it pushed Desmond to the OF most days.

The whole team is playing under expectations this year IMO and the pitching staff is grossly underperforming. Not sure why basically the entire bullpen hasn't been traded or DFA'd except Oberg. Rox probably can't be worse by just rotating guys up from AAA than pitching Davis, Shaw, etc at least at home. So yeah, Bridich definitely deserves criticism but I think some falls on the players and to some degree he has made what I thought were reasonable moves that just didn't pan out.
