Thumbs down on Scorcese's The Irishman....

First the good. Marty does a great job of nailing the authenticity of the 50s and 60s, the cars, the clothes, the music, and the organized crime culture. The film is beautifully shot, with good acting by DeNiro, Keitel, Romano, and Pesci. But it is a slow-moving 3.5 hour grind of a storyline that breaks no new ground in the genre. There's nothing here that hasn't been done much better by Godfather I/II, Goodfellas, Bronx Tale. Pacino's performance is over-the-top and cartoonish - he's become a caricature of his earlier self. And, as is often the case in Scorcese films, the female characters get short shrift, limited to repeated shots of their silent disapproval of all the criminality. The movie left me with the feeling of a bunch of talented old guys going through the motions in a hollow reprise of their earlier greatness. If you already have Netflix it won't cost you anything, but you can probably find a better use of 3.5 hours.
