But you are spot on with the authenticity of the time.

I thought the acting was quite good and as far as the movie being too long, I was mesmerized by it. IMO not a boring scene.

I tend to judge films by how much I think about them and for how long that thinking lasts. I watched it Wednesday night, fell asleep in bed thinking about it, woke up thinking about it and was thinking about at times today.

The gangster genre is what it is.

However, my wife dropped out of watching it after the scene when DeNiro executed the two German soldiers. But she can't stand violence in movies but that's another story.
