I mentioned this on Facebook, but ironically, on Thursday last week, I was in meetings downtown...and my phone rang. I looked down and it was Sonny's number. I stepped out of the meeting....because who wouldn't when Sonny calls? I answered the call...told him how great it was to hear from him.and he proceeded to tell me that he and Carol Jo were digging through an old box of Christmas cards and came across one that my wife and I had sent them. They weren't sure if they had ever written back (they DID write a very nice card back)...so he was calling to say hi. We spoke for 10-15 minutes, and what amazes me is he remembers so many details from so long ago....like a dinner that a few of us had with him and Carol Jo at Johnny Carinos as part of a Ram Good Time Auction prize. This was close to 20 years ago.and he remembered all the details...and we were telling stories about how fun that night was.
This was the head CSU football coach back then having dinner with three young couples out of college. We figured it would be a relatively quick dinner...Sonny living up to his obligations. But we ended up staying for more than four hours, ordering many bottles of wine, a second meal...and ultimately shutting down the restaurant. Sonny and Carol Jo are two of the kindest, most genuine people there are. And Sonny is the best coach CSU has ever had. CSU is so lucky to have had him as coach and still very fortunate to have him around the university. They don't make 'em like Sonny anymore. One of the best ever.
