Steawrt Mandel Grading college football’s HC hires in the 2019-20 cycle

For those without an Athletic subscription, here's his MWC breakdown:

Fresno State (A): Indiana offensive coordinator Kaelen DeBoer. Fantastic hire. DeBoer, 45, was the OC for Jeff Tedford’s 2017 and ’18 Fresno State teams that went a combined 22-6 and won a conference title. Then he went to Bloomington and helped Indiana to its best season in 26 years. He also won three NAIA championships as head coach at Sioux Falls.

New Mexico (B+): Arizona State defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales. The former Lobos walk-on and two-time assistant returns to his alma mater after three seasons leading defenses at San Diego State and Arizona State. Gonzales, 44, can bring the community together after Bob Davie’s tumultuous eight-year tenure.

Hawaii (B-): Former Arizona State coach Todd Graham. Graham had a more successful run at Arizona State than most remember (he went 31-23 in the Pac-12), but it’s unclear why Hawaii settled on an out-of-work coach with no ties to the islands. He will be the first outsider to hold the job in 22 years.

San Diego State (C+): Defensive line coach Brady Hoke. What a weird decade it was for Hoke, who, upon leaving San Diego State for Michigan in 2011, got fired from four consecutive jobs, the last three (Oregon, Tennessee and the Carolina Panthers) after just one season. Now he’s back where he started, older and (hopefully) wiser.

UNLV (C): Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo. “Underwhelming” is the word I’d use here, which is unfortunate given Vegas calls for something more over-the-top. Arroyo, 39, had a great final season at Oregon but by no means was considered a rock-star coordinator. The former San Jose State QB and Wyoming assistant at least knows the region.

Colorado State (D): Former Boston College coach Steve Addazio. This was by far the strangest hire of the whole carousel. Thanks to Addazio pal Urban Meyer serving as consultant during the search, CSU wound up hiring a career 57-55 head coach with zero experience in the Western half of the country. Good luck to all.
