The Final Countdown

Will there be a college football season this year? If so, will Colorado's two most prominent schools meet 100 days from now at Canvas Stadium?

Unless it is determined otherwise, let the Final Countdown begin as CU and CSU meet for the last time in a string of 26 seasons in a row. The rivalry starts up again in 2023, of course, but no longer will be contested on an annual basis. My first Countdown was way back in 2007 (I think), and the lists have included a wide variety of ways to go from 100 to 1, including jersey numbers, other sports-related topics, history and pop culture.

The "Colorado Classics" title is an homage to Irv Moss, himself a former CSU student, who died this year at age 85 after setting a record that will never be broken: 60 years as a sportswriter at the Denver Post. Irv was a key figure in founding and selecting members for the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, and he composed a long-running, fascinating feature history series about Colorado athletes called "Colorado Classics" for the Post. Irv wrote about a lot of folks on this list of 100.

Huge kudos to nateDiggsCSU, who provided the idea for this year's topic. My list is 100 athletes who are "Colorado Classics" by meeting any of three criteria:
-- Born in Colorado
-- Raised in Colorado
-- Went to high school in Colorado

Please don’t be too concerned about who is ranked how highly until the top 20 or so. I didn’t get nearly that fine. And this list is not particular college-centric. In most cases (not all), what they did in high school and beyond college will count for more. A number of athletes on the list went to the schools in the Rocky Mountain Showdown, but that fact is not taken into account in this Countdown's selection, although the selectees' college careers certainly matter, wherever they played. The list is subjective -- how could it not be? -- but is my attempt to name, in some order, the best or most prominent athletes Colorado has produced. Almost 100 more were considered but didn't make the cut. In a few cases, a fabulous Colorado high school career is enough to the make the list all by itself. Who is No. 1? That's TBA and I have three-plus months to make that decision. It's far from a slam dunk.

And in this crazy year, it's not a slam dunk that the Showdown will happen on Sept. 5. If anything changes, I'll suspend the Countdown, then resume it at the appropriate time.

On to the Final Countdown! I hope you enjoy it.
