It’s Cohlton Schultz Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#97 Colorado Classic

Colorado connections: Born and raised in Parker, and graduated from Ponderosa High School.

Accomplishments: Schultz, who won his fourth state championship in four years for Ponderosa in 2019, is generally considered the best Colorado-born wrestler ever. He was rated the top high school wrestler, pound for pound, in the United States as a senior, a rare feat for a heavyweight. He got there, in part, by defeating four-time California state heavyweight champion Seth Nevills, dealing Nevills his only high school loss. Schultz is already a national champion, having won the 130-kilogram (286.6 pounds) Greco-Roman title at the U.S. Senior Nationals. He redshirted at Arizona State as a freshman so he could concentrate on making the U.S. Olympic team. That pursuit got delayed a year by the coronavirus pandemic. If Schultz wins an NCAA title at Arizona State, will will become the second Sun Devils heavyweight to do so, joining Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman Curley Culp. One more thing: Schultz was born the same day, Sept. 28, 2000, that Rulon Gardner defeated Russia's Aleksandr Karelin to win the Olympic gold medal in Greco in Sydney, one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

On deck: A Fountain of talent.
