It’s Melody Fairchild Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#73 Colorado Classic

Colorado connections: Born and raised in Boulder, and graduated from Boulder High School.

Accomplishments: Almost every prep race Melody Fairchild ran was like Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont. "She's moving like a tremendous machine!" I saw her run a number of times, and she would typically be in command within a quarter mile, then steadily pull away to win by astonishing margins. Fairchild was arguably the best high school girls distance runner ... ever. She won six state titles in cross country and track, but that's just the start. In cross country, there actually is a national championship for prep athletes. Fairchild won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship in San Diego as a junior, then again as a senior. Fairchild won the Bolder Boulder 10K citizens race while a junior at Boulder High in a time that would have placed third in the women's elite race, making her a world-class runner at age 17. She was the first American high school girl to run 2 miles in less than 10 minutes. Because of injuries and other issues, Fairchild struggled at times at the University of Oregon but was still strong enough to place ninth in the NCAA cross country meet as a junior and win a national indoor championship in the 3,000 meters. She also was a state champion in softball. What position? Pinch runner, of course, for the Boulder Panthers, Colorado's first dynasty in that prep sport.

On deck: Molly's little brother.
