It’s Frank Gross Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#70 Colorado Classic

Colorado connections: Raised in Colorado Springs and graduated from Wasson High School.

Accomplishments: Frank Gross was the epitome of a late bloomer. He attended Wasson at about the same time as Rich Gossage and was a good athlete but nothing special. Gross then enlisted for military service and got bigger, and stronger, and bigger, and stronger, and went to Adams State College on a track scholarship. He became merely the best thrower this state ever produced. Before he was done in Alamosa, he had won five national championships in shot put and discus, and even placed second in the hammer throw one year despite not practicing that event until the week before nationals. One week before the national meet in Texas one year, Gross and a fellow Adams State thrower were working out. Gross had his teammate run out to measure some discus throws in practice. The first was no big deal. The second "looked like it was shot out of a cannon," the teammate, who placed in the discus in the state meet in high school, told me. The distance: an astounding 214 feet. That was good enough to win most Olympic Games competitions. But later that night, Gross was bitten by a brown recluse spider. He still was able to compete in the national meet, and won the shot and discus -- but not nearly at the distance he hit in practice. Gross rejoined the Air Force after graduation, this time as an officer, and won numerous World Military Games titles.

On deck: A Savage competitor.
