Fun with numbers. You can make data look as good or as bad as you desire

The link only shows the increases/decreases on mask "policy" for the last 2 weeks. Well, several states have had the mask mandate implemented for multiple months now, including New York (April 15th). So only the last 2 weeks count? So the masks didn't work early on in New York, but they work magic now? Conversely, not having masks early on in Texas/Arizona worked fine, but only now it's a complete disaster? Personally, I just think the virus is blowing through different parts of the country at different times regardless of policy. Like someone said here early on, it's like stopping the wind.

Crunching numbers has been the focal point for a large portion of my career. When tasked with an analysis, I always asked, how good or bad do you want to make this look? It's incredibly easy to cherry pick a few weeks of data vs a few months to meet your predetermined goal. Or do a month over month vs a year over year etc. There's an infinite number of ways to do this. Same with graphing. Just something to keep in mind.
