It’s Lavon Williams Day for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

#67 Colorado Classic

Colorado connections: Raised in Denver, and graduated from Manual High School.

Accomplishments: Lavon Williams was an artist, on and off the court. Williams was a star from the moment he took the floor for Manual High School in 1973, and as a sophomore helped the Thunderbolts reach the Class AAA state championship game in 1974, when they were upset by Bear Creek and guard Randy Eckker. Williams got it right two years later, as unbeaten Manual routed previously unbeaten Cherry Creek in the title game before a sellout crowd the first time Colorado's state tournament was held at McNichols Sports Arena. The 1976 Manual team, which also featured eventual college players Antoine Goodlow, Zelwood Head, Chris Cotton and David Bennett, ranks among the best Colorado has ever produced. Williams was a Parade All-American and the state's finest player that year (objectively) and even for the decade (subjectively). Then he was off to the University of Kentucky, turning down the likes of UCLA and North Carolina, and he became a two-year starter in Lexington while helping the Wildcats win the 1978 national championship. He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the fifth round of the 1980 NBA draft, and he played overseas for a stretch, but his artistry from that point lay outside sports. The 6-foot-7 Williams began a long career as a wood sculptor, and was inducted in the University of Kentucky Hall of Fame in 2018 at age 60. Not UK's basketball Hall, but its College of Arts and Sciences Hall. "I usually work, probably I start working from about 7 o'clock (p.m.) to 3 in the morning," Williams told Mark Story in a story for Kentucky.com "I work to 3, 4, even 6 (a.m.). Nighttime is when you get your most inspiration. It's when they say the spirits come out."

On deck: The best football player in the history of Community College of Denver.
