Today is a big day for the country

Today the electors cast their votes in the electoral college and the Pfizer vaccine will administered to the first US citizens as well.

The vaccine marks turning a corner vs COVID, even though there is quite a bit further to go, including some potentially ugly fights over continued mask wearing and who gets a vaccine that will be in short supply for awhile. As things stand with the vaccines that are approved the US is promised enough for 100M people by the end of March, meaning less than 40% of people over 16. I think in December everyone will be OK with healthcare and nursing home folks getting vaccinated before they are. In Feb and Mar I think the debates will be a little more vigorous.

And on the electors/electoral college, do the manipulations attempted by the POTUS give rise to another reason to abolish the electoral college and instead elect a president by popular vote? The claims of voter fraud by the President were pretty summarily struck down by the courts with fairly black and white laws (i.e. you need evidence to bring a challenge). The attempts by the POTUS to get states to not certify election counts or to ignore the certified vote and pick other electors fall into more of a gray area. Some (many? all?) of the state laws seem to be antiquated or vague here using language along the lines of if the will of the people is unclear and the like. While the courts backstopped the fraud cases the sanctity of the elector selection lies only with elected officials who can be quite partisan and I don't feel that firewall is very solid. As 2020 looks the electoral college is biggest source of potential fraud/election stealing. At a minimum I think the laws for selecting electors need to be updaed.
