Does tone matter?

I saw a bit of Joe Biden's statement just now in which he repeated the warning that things will get worse before they get better.

In many ways I pity Biden, because the dye has been cast, and recreating public unity is impossible at this point. As Nate said the other day, we're down to personal choices at this point.

Do you think that had Trump issued the same kind of sober assessments on a consistent basis that we could've avoided a culture war? Or was it bound to happen because that's just what we do?

I'm inclined to say that it would've made a difference because message consistency is a key part of standard leadership or crisis communications. But I don't actually know that it's true, given the growing presence of conspiracy and alternative facts, even at the best of times.

I think Trump missed a golden opportunity, he could've freakin' branded masks, played the hero, while spinning up some crazy anti-Chinese sentiment. He would've won reelection in a walk, but would the conspiracy stuff still have taken over?

Can the president really drive the narrative anymore?
