I hate the fact that I feel the need to respond to this post. I hate the fact that after a year of a significant segment of the population of the US demonstrating time and time again it is unable and unwilling to just exert a little self-discipline over itself and show the slightest amount of empathy for its fellow citizens, we are still arguing about why do we have to do it. I hate the fact that my sister, who works as a PA in both a clinic and an ER, deals on a daily basis with both this virus and the crap mentality of people who claim health protocols are an infringement of our rights. I hate the fact that she tells us the stories of who is coming into her ER and the realizations of the patients and the families alike when they realize what is about to happen. I hate the fact that some of these (not most, just some) people are young. I hate the fact that some of these (not most, just some) are athletes (even one instance of an ultramarathoner). I hate the fact that people have not come to realize yet that even though this virus usually does not affect young people, that young people can still obviously unknowingly transmit it to others who it could drastically affect and further spread it to others. I hate the fact that my wife, a teacher who has pre-existing conditions, is now surrounded on a daily basis by hundreds of these young people, some of who have parents telling them that health protocols are an infringement on their rights and have no empathy for what these teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. I hate the fact that this country is so polarized politically that it can't come together to just agree to make things safer for all of us. I hate the fact that some people (some, not all) fail to see how the exercise of their individual freedoms actually negatively impact (and in some cases, restrict) the freedoms of others, and that is the very basis for implementing laws, rules, and yes, health protocols. I hate the fact that people failing to follow these health protocols have resulted in the virus killing over 468,000 people (and counting) in the US alone. and I hate the fact that I feel the need to have to explain these facts to someone upset that a basketball game was unfortunately canceled at the last moment.

So while I agree that it is extremely unlikely to have killed any of the players had the game been played last night, the cancellation may have stopped the virus from spreading to yet another person or group of people it could have killed. We will never know if it was the right call, but I'm not about to complain about someone making a reasonable decision in the interests of the larger community's health and safety.
