It's tough, but I think I'd rather have New Mexico...
Yes, this doesn't do much for our NET and efficiency ratings, but two more wins on the resume is better than not having two wins on the resume.
The Nevada games have absolutely terrified me. They straight-up beat Boise in both games, and Sherfield may be the best guard in the conference. I would've been thrilled with a split- and I'm not sure a split is actually better than having no games played (even if the computers don't think much of it, it's another loss on our record and we don't have much room for error). And there's very real risk in just getting swept, which would really be bad. If the games were played on a neutral court... that's a bit more appealing- but it also would make losing even worse lol. The other side is, if you win both, you're likely in for sure, and we're firmly on the bubble. Again, it's tough.
But sweeping New Mexico -- if those are the only two games added -- would give CSU the No. 1 seed and regular-season title. Does that part really matter for the NCAA Tournament? Probably not much, anyway. But it stands out -- and gets people to take notice -- and boosts the perception of our program, is something that will be mentioned on TV broadcasts for the next year, is something to brag about to recruits, and it's a banner to hang up at Moby. That's very meaningful to our program, even if it doesn't actually change our NCAA Tournament chances. I'm sure Niko had this as the team's biggest goal for example- aim for the regular-season title, worry about the rest later.
But, as far as the conference tournament, you avoid playing Nevada immediately for sure (the 4-seed will play them), and would likely play whoever finishes with the worst record of Fresno/UNLV/Wyoming. Beating one of them (and in a neutral environment at the conference tournament) actually has some value too.
In the end, I'd rather have two very likely wins (even if they aren't very valuable to the resume) over two coin-flip games. Very little risk, vs lots of risk (even if it has a lot of potential reward that would be big for a team on the bubble).
