That's the typical time to get to Mars. It can be done quicker, but takes

some planets aligning up and such. It's something Nasa or whoever obviously has to consider with any future manned missions. The dangers of being in space like that, plus any emergency recovery is 6 months away or more. Now there's things that could be done to mitigate a rescue. Such as a staggered set of launches, so that a second mission would only be two months away, and then a third another two-total four months and such. Any manned trip to Mars is essentially a minimum of one year. We aren't likely sending humans there to spend one afternoon on the surface. Today is another great day for space exploration.
