Splitting at Nevada would be a good result for all but probably the top-20

They swept Boise there and truly looked like the better team in those games. They lost by a combined seven points over two games at SDSU. They have arguably the best guard in our conference and have started playing much better of late- and are particularly tough to beat at home.

Sweeping them in Reno would be a sub-50% chance for anybody in our conference and on the bubble. Even doing that on a neutral floor probably would be. So, suggesting that CSU wouldn't be deserving if they couldn't sweep these games isn't really fair.

And splitting vs them may not actually help our resume. That's the concern. As Sports Illustrated's Kevin Sweeney put it today:

Here’s the thing — the NCAA isn’t going to put in CSU because they add another Q2 at Nevada. But beating the crap out of a terrible UNM team and juicing your NET from 46 to 38 or something might actually help."

This type of scheduling gamesmanship is happening everywhere. The bottom line is that no matter what, CSU will have fewer Q1 + Q2 wins than the HMs. Right now they have a 4-3 record in those games and solid metrics. Juicing metrics > a 50/50 game that’s best case is a weak Q2."

I agree with what he's saying- I'd rather beat up on New Mexico and take two more wins -- while potentially boosting efficiency numbers if they could really bring it in those games -- than take the very real risk of getting swept by Nevada/not gaining much if anything by a split. The realistic reward is just not there enough, and the risk could be crushing.

Additionally, the New Mexico games make the regular-season title/No. 1 seed path much easier, and that's not nothing for our program (we literally have *zero* MWC regular-season titles, and only won the WAC twice), even if it has minimal 2021 NCAA Tournament impact (I'd also rather be the MWC tourney No. 1 seed than not be, anyway.).
