The power of ESPN

The SEC and B12 commissioners were working on expansion plans for the college football playoffs while Texas and Oklahoma were working behind the scenes to maneuver their way into the SEC. This just proves that Sankey, the SEC commisioner, is indeed a dirty bastard. ESPN and the SEC work hand in hand. A decade ago UT, Oklahoma, OKie St, and Texas Tech were ready to join the PAC 12. ESPN worked behind the scenes to make sure that didn't happen. The proposed CFP expansion was suggesting a move to 12 teams. But, there were limited provisions for automatic qualifying for conference champions. The underlying goal was to get upwards of 6 SEC teams into the playoffs. Naturally, ESPN, being the network of the SEC, was all for this. The alliance by the B10, P12, and ACC is a move to form a bond in order to limit the further consolidation of college football around ESPN. Some things like a scheduling alliance can also increase ratings so that other networks, such as CBS and Foz Sports can counter the power of ESPN. It will also allow Fox to have a chance to bid on the rights for the college playoffs.
