But did they?

For a time, sure. But in the end, they won. Maybe not al Qaeda but clearly the people in charge now are not the 'good guys'. Under the Taliban they'll go right back to Islamic law, oppression of women (and, basically everyone), and supporting terrorism against the US and other western nations & Israel. In the end, whatever price they paid will be viewed as martyrdom whereas the US bore the real brunt of it. 20 years of lives, limbs, and lots of money for - what? Hard to see that the end result is that terrorist organizations will be afraid to attack us again. It's inevitable.

On the other hand, I agree we couldn't do NOTHING following 9/11. Everything about that attack gave us need and justification for a clear, violent response. It just seems that it was ultimately a Vietnam-like escalation where we kept committing more troops, more money, more time without any clear objectives or viable plan of how to get out.
