If academics and prestige didn't matter, Boise and possibly others like

BYU, UNLV and SDSU would already be in the PAC.
It might reach a point where it does not matter so much in the future but it definitely has mattered a.lot in the last 20 years. For the Big10 and ACC as well. There's a reason why WVU is not in ACC.
