Your logic is flawed
We've never been energy-independent. Oil is a globally traded commodity and the U.S. is a free market. If someone in Europe wants to buy Texas crude, they can move it cross-border. We have produced more than we consume, briefly, but domestic production is expensive and only rises when gas prices rise.
The U.S. converts 49% of oil into gasoline. A further 29% becomes diesel. So 80% of all our imported and produced oil goes to transportation. Meanwhile every major automotive company in the world is eliminating fossil fuel-powered cars and trucks in the next 10-15 years. If you are Shell or Exxon, etc, - are you gonna be spending a shitload to build new offshore rigs and other major investments when your product will become significantly less valuable in a decade?
If you want to see the USA not import any more oil then the best way is to support alternative energies. And by the way, US Oil producers get $20 Billion in subsidies from everyone on this board.
