So here are the current tax rates for transportation fuels:
Gasoline tax: $0.184/gallon
Diesel tax: $0.244/gallon
Aviation fuel tax: $0.194/gallon
Jet fuel tax: $0.219/gallon
For gasoline the tax accounts for 3.7%+ of the total cost of a gallon based on a pump cost of 5.00/gallon. Seems to me that means getting rid of the national gas tax doesn't bring the cost down much at all. Maybe it's more for the more expensive fuels and higher tax fuels like diesel and jet fuel but only marginally. To me it's not a good idea.
