The unskilled labor market is C-R-A-Z-Y

My kid is saving up for college and has a job at the local Wendy's.
Wendy's is paying $16/hr for staff positions.

This happened last night and is pretty much par for the course now:
Staffed for 5 plus mgr last night
3 don't show up
my kid shows up (obviously because he was raised properly)
Only one other shows up, but doesn't have required non-slip shoes, proceeds to fall twice and gets sent home
Leaves the mgr and my kid to cover evening rush. After trying, they physically are unable to do it.
So they have to shut down the store. My kid comes home frazzled as shit.
They can't/won't fire the people that didn't show up or the people that show up without the proper safety wear because, if they did, they would not be able to replace them and the restaurant would have to close permanently. Each night is a crap shoot in terms of who will and will not show up for their shift.

My opinion is that there are plenty of would-be legal immigrants that would love to do that job. They would show up on time, come prepared, and would appreciate the opportunity to work.
