I will add that I covered the volleyball team as a collegian reporter

And Hilbert was so helpful, patient and understanding as I navigated the process of learning the sport. Like I barely knew that there were positions in volleyball when I was assigned to cover it, and here I am talking to a top-level coach 1-1 and he's taking the time to help me understand what a libero is, how rotations/substitutions work and how it deadly when you get caught in a bad one, and so much more. Never big timed me, never acted above me, but helped me understand and grow to love the sport. It's exactly what he did for this entire community, creating a team that we could be proud of on and off the court.

I interviewed him later that year for a story after he won his 300th match at CSU and he stated that he was truly living the dream, getting to coach at CSU in "the best college volleyball town in the country". And he stayed true to his word later that year, as CU threw a lot of money at him, along with the Big 12 prestige, despite initially agreeing to leave. Wild that he won another 300+ matches since then and never missed an NCAA Tournament until the last two years, (probably one of the biggest wins in CSU history right there, can't image watching him coach at CU).

He is a true coaching legend who also threw the best Cinco De Mayo parties in the game. CSU is certainly gonna miss him.
