Yes but going for 2 down by 8 was not the situation The situation was

going for 2 down by 14.

My best guess is that most teams go for 2 in critical situations, so that the data for going for 2 is pretty legit to game on the line type situations. The number used in the article (which is a little dated) were going for 2 is 43% successful on a single try. So the odds of making at least one 2-pt conversion on 2 tries are 67.5% if I have done my math properly. The odds of kicking 2 extra points were 94% at the time of the article.

Of course, this all begs the question why not go for 2 all the time. My best guess is that this would result in some wins but also a loss or two for a mediocre team, and fan base would go nuts after a loss and it would be a huge distraction for a college football coach. Plus we dont know if teams went for 2 all the time if DC's would get better at stopping it being able to scout what a team runs in those situations.
