The problems all begin at the youth level

Coaches assemble teams that are more advanced physically and are less concerned with identifying and developing soccer skills. Said teams win because they out-athlete others.

They are able to out-athlete others because the US Youth system (all the way through college) allows for unlimited substitution . A player sprints for 20 minutes, gets subbed out for a rest, then goes back and sprints for 20 minutes. Teams kick long balls and sprint after them. The team with the most fast players usually wins.

In the meantime, youth soccer in foreign countries develops skills and focus on ball possession because they only allow 3 subs per game. Soccer is a very different game when you have to play for a full 60 or 90 minutes.
